New Sporran

Lately I've wanted to make some appearance change to my pipin' duds. I'm always looking for some, out of the ordinary ideas, but this particular change was intended to enhance my "old times" costume. I started by acquiring a badger skin from a trapper friend of mine and got to work.

I removed the head and hind from the pelt using the middle body portion to make a pouch. A scrap of Elk Hyde worked as a backing for the pouch. I then attached a 1&1/2 inch waist belt as the strap. The badger skin is far to heavy for a regular sporran chain and the thick leather belt offers much more of a rustic look.

After the pouch was sewn to the belt I reversed the head and front paws, and attached them to the back of the pouch so they can hang over the front, serving as a flap to close the sporran.

At the completion of the project, I'm quite pleased with my new sporran. In fact, I think it's going to get a bit more wear than I had originally intended.

Perhaps over winter I'll combine it with the Russian style fur hat I bought in Alaska this summer, creating the perfect "what in the world is that guy wearing?" effect.
